Competitions
A variety of events are regularly run throughout the year at a
number of different sites, mainly in Kent and Sussex. See the Events page for
details of forthcoming events.
A number of these events have camping and caravaning weekends
associated with them. Details are published in the monthly Club newsletter and
quarterly magazine.
The competitive events include:
Competitive Safaris
A timed event where competitors are required to complete the course
within a target time. Penalties are accrued for every second taken in excess of
the target time and the winner is the competitor with the least penalties.
These events require a high level of vehicle preparation and personal protective
equipment. Prospective competitors need to study the current ALRC Year Book for
details of vehicle preparation. One passenger or "navigator" is
allowed.

Cross Country Vehicle (CCV) Trials
These are not timed events. A number of marked sections, usually 8,
typically of 12 gates, are driven during the day. The driver with lowest number
of penalties is the winner. Penalties are awarded for stopping, hitting gate
markers, or failing to pass through a gate. ALRC specification roll cages are
necessary. Only really suitable for short wheelbase vehicles. One passenger or
"navigator" is allowed.

¨ Road Taxed Vehicle
(RTV) Trials
These are not timed events. A number of marked sections, usually 8,
typically of 12 gates, are driven during the day. The driver with lowest number
of penalties is the winner. Penalties are awarded for stopping, hitting gate
markers, or failing to pass through a gate. These events are specifically for
road going vehicles, and only minimal vehicle preparation is required. These
events are not intended to be damaging to vehicles. Suitable for all types of
Land Rover vehicles. One passenger or "navigator" is allowed.

¨ Tyro Trials
A recently introduced type of trial, similar to an RTV trial, but
aimed at first time drivers and those with "showroom" condition
vehicles. These trials are laid out to ARC specifications regarding the ground
to ensure that they cannot cause damage. Suitable for all types of Land Rover
vehicles. Tyro trials can be driven by drivers over 13 years age if they are
accompanied by an experienced trials driver. More than one passenger is allowed
within certain restrictions.

¨ Gymkhanas
Lighthearted "driving test" type events where all the
family can take part. Suitable for road going vehicles as well as off-road
vehicles. Passengers are allowed, and often actually required!

¨ Winch Recoverys
Recovery competitions involving a team of members and a winch
vehicle. Teams are marked on safe and efficient use of the winch while carrying
out a specific task, often the recovery of a disabled vehicle.
¨ Team Recoverys
Timed events for teams of two vehicles and drivers. Both vehicles
must pass over a course, assisting each other by any suitable means. Comp
safari specifications apply.
Junior Trials
Junior Trials is the latest formula introduced by the MSA and SROC
are proud to have been closely associated with the development, The very first Junior Trial was run by
Southern at our March meeting at Copford in 2003. The JTV formula uses modified Lawn Tractors
to provide trials for 8 to 17 year olds.
